Has virtual learning been difficult for your child?  Do they struggle to keep up with school work?  As education trends towards online learning, and virtual academies continue to form to include younger kids, it’s necessary that kids develop lifelong skills to make them successful.

Some have said that virtual learning doesn’t work.  But, kids can learn online, though some will have more difficulty than others.  Virtual learning requires specific skills in order to be successful.  The key is to identify the missing link and an action plan.

For many students who struggle with virtual learning, they seem to lack infrastructure.  This affects every area of their online learning experience and compounds underlying organizational issues.  This is especially true for kids with anxiety, depression, and learning disabilities like Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and dyslexia.  The first step is to organize the child’s workspace, thus we have developed a checklist we feel will help get you and your child started:

  • Is the lighting bright enough and conducive to learning?
  • Are the electronic devices working?
  • Does the child have the necessary writing utensils, paper, textbooks, etc.?
  • Is the child is sitting in a chair at a table?
  • Does the child understand how to use the technology and how to turn in assignments on time?

Another lifelong skill that children need is effective time management.  Setting a timer is a great tool to use while learning from home.  A timer helps kids keep strictly to time and assists in structuring their day.  For instance, set a timer as a school bell to remind them that class has started and ended.

While learning online, students who engage also improve self-motivation.  Kids need to be proactive in studying so that they don’t get behind.  This includes asking questions when they need help and taking advantage of tutoring hours outside of school, as well as breakout groups.

Sometimes a tutor is needed to help get the child back on track.  One-on-one tutoring makes a big difference in a child’s life by bringing accountability and consistency into their lives.  As the tutor gets to know the student’s weaknesses or gaps, they can develop effective strategies to address them and enhance the virtual learning experience.
